The social concept of being realistic
We’re all told from a young age that being realistic is key. You know, “Keep your feet on the ground,” “Don’t get your hopes up,” “Dream realistically,” and all those other gems of advice.
But what if I told you that this relentless pursuit of realism might actually be holding you back?
Let’s be honest: realism is often code for “don’t dream too big.” Being realistic is only been taught to us to not make any trouble and to keep us down.
It’s a sneaky little voice that says, “Oh, that’s impossible,” or “You’re being foolish.” And yeah, it’s meant to keep us grounded, but isn’t there something kind of exciting about stepping off the edge of that cliff and seeing what happens?
You are holding yourself back by telling yourself you need to be realistic, BUT you are special and you can achieve great things. “Yes, you can!” ~ my mom 🙂
Why you shouldn’t be realistic
Being realistic often means sticking to what you know, what you can measure, and what seems achievable based on past experiences.
While this approach has its merits, it also comes with a big caveat: it can confine you to a narrow path and prevent you from exploring the full range of possibilities.
Forget being realistic. Success takes delusion and obsession. Act like it’s going to happen. Believe it’s already yours. You are the main character. You can make life the reality you want it to be.
Successful as shit
Here’s the kicker: many of the greatest successes in history were achieved by people who weren’t bound by conventional thinking. They dared to challenge the status quo, envisioning a world beyond the ordinary. By rejecting realism, they were able to push the boundaries of what was considered possible.
Think about the big movers and shakers in history. Steve Jobs? Probably not very realistic when he envisioned a computer in everyone’s pocket. J.K. Rowling? She had a pretty unrealistic idea that a kid with a lightning scar would captivate millions. And don’t even get me started on Elon Musk and his Mars dreams.
Not being realistic helped these people achieve their dreams, you can also achieve your dreams. So, before you start or do something in life, you never know where you will end up!
The best things happen in the unknown and the unpredictable, so stop worrying about what will happen, because you never ever know. Discover the freedom you will enjoy when you go past your fears.
Living predictable
Being realistic might get you a steady job and a predictable life, but it also might snuff out your inner spark.
The next time you have an idea that feels a bit out there, don’t squash it with the heavy hand of realism. Instead, give it some room to breathe. Who knows? It might just turn into something incredible.
And here’s the kicker: being “unrealistic” isn’t about ignoring the hard work or planning it takes to bring a dream to life.
It’s about allowing yourself to imagine beyond the ordinary, to break free from the bounds of what seems doable, and to chase after what sets your soul on fire.
How to stop being realistic
1. Embrace imagination over limits
Start by allowing yourself to dream without boundaries. Imagine what you would do if you had no constraints, no limits on time or resources.
Let your imagination run wild.
The more you indulge in this kind of thinking, the more you’ll discover innovative ideas and opportunities that you wouldn’t have considered if you were being “realistic.”
2. Question the norms
Ask yourself, “Why do things have to be done this way?” Challenge the conventional wisdom and explore alternative approaches. Often, the “realistic” path is just the most commonly accepted one, not necessarily the best or most innovative.
3. Surround yourself with dreamers
Engage with people who think big and dream boldly. Their enthusiasm and unconventional ideas can be incredibly infectious and will help you break free from the constraints of realism. Look for communities, groups, or mentors who encourage visionary thinking.
4. Take bold, calculated risks
Being unrealistic doesn’t mean being reckless. It means taking smart risks based on your grand visions. Analyze potential outcomes, plan strategically, and then take the plunge into uncharted territory. Even if you fail, you’ll gain invaluable experience and insights.
5. Celebrate the unconventional
Don’t just think outside the box—celebrate it. Recognize and reward yourself for pursuing daring ideas and breaking away from traditional norms. This positive reinforcement can fuel further creativity and innovation.
When you SHOULD be realistic
I’m not saying to say “Fuck it” every time, I’m saying to allow yourself to be unrealistic. But when you want to make the next step in your unrealistic plan/dream you should make realistic moves, make realistic plans. Don’t overdo it, you should plan wise & realistic.
First, you need to let go of being realistic and believing you can achieve your dreams.
Second, your realism needs to kick in to make a worthy, conventional plan.
From there you take manageable and steps and you set small realistic goals to achieve your “unrealistic” dream.
In conclusion
Being realistic can sometimes be a safe, predictable route, but it’s also the path that often leads to mediocrity. By daring to think beyond conventional limits, you open yourself up to a world of possibilities that can lead to extraordinary achievements.
So, let’s embrace the unconventional, reject the constraints of realism, and dream big. After all, it’s the audacious dreamers who often shape the future and redefine what’s possible.
Dream boldly, take risks, and never be afraid to push the boundaries of what’s considered realistic. The world is full of opportunities waiting for those who dare to dream beyond the ordinary.
So, let’s make a deal with ourselves: let’s stop letting realism be the boss of us. Let’s embrace the impossible, celebrate the absurd, and give ourselves permission to dream without limits. And then you persuade realistic/manageable. Because sometimes, the most amazing things in life come from the most unrealistic ideas.
So go on, dream big and don’t let anyone tell you to be realistic. After all, isn’t it the dreamers who end up changing the world?
Here’s to breaking free from realism and forging new paths!
Catch you on the other side of the impossible! 🌟
