What is self-care?
Self-care is the intentional practice of taking care of your own physical, emotional, and mental health to maintain overall well-being. It’s the practice of making time for yourself to recharge, reduce stress, and foster overall health.
Far from being a luxury, self-care is a fundamental necessity that helps you stay balanced, prevent burnout, and enhance your quality of life. It involves listening to your needs and making choices that foster resilience and joy, ultimately ensuring that you are in a better position to handle life’s demands and pursue your goals.
Rather than being a one-size-fits-all solution, self-care is a personalized approach to nurturing yourself, whether that means getting enough sleep, engaging in activities you love, or setting boundaries to protect your energy.
At its core, self-care is about prioritizing your needs and well-being, ensuring you’re in a good place to face life’s challenges and enjoy its joys.
Why self-care is a Big Deal
First off, why should we even bother with self-care? It’s not just a trendy buzzword; it’s essential. Think of self-care as the oil that keeps your engine running smoothly.
When you take care of yourself, you’re more resilient, focused, and better equipped to handle life’s ups and downs. It’s about recharging your batteries so you can show up as your best self in all areas of life.
Also, self-care is a great way of creating more self-love. To do something for yourself, will give you an overall bigger feeling of worthiness & happiness.
I started from zero, too
Here’s a bit of honesty: when I first tried to embrace self-care, I felt completely lost. I struggled with my mental health a lot. So, the idea of fitting another task into my already overflowing schedule seemed impossible. I remember staring at self-care checklists online and thinking, “Where do I even start?” It wasn’t until I took small, manageable steps that I began to see real benefits. If you’re feeling like you’re starting from zero, trust me, I’ve been there. And now, my moments of self-care are some of my favorite moments of the day.
How to ease into self-care
Starting a self-care routine doesn’t need to be a Herculean task. It’s all about making gradual changes that fit into your life. Here’s a gentle guide to help you ease into it:
- Begin with tiny steps: No need to dive into a massive self-care regimen right away. Start with small, easy-to-implement actions. Maybe it’s setting aside five minutes each day to relax or enjoying a quiet cup of coffee in the morning. Tiny steps can lead to big changes over time.
- Prioritize rest: Sleep is often overlooked, but it’s crucial. Aim for a consistent sleep schedule and create a soothing bedtime routine. Quality rest can make a huge difference in how you feel and function daily.
- Find fun in movement: Exercise doesn’t have to be a grueling workout. Find a form of movement that you actually enjoy. Whether it’s dancing around your living room, taking a leisurely walk, or stretching while watching TV, the key is to make it something you look forward to.
- Set gentle boundaries: Learning to say no is an important part of self-care. It’s okay to protect your time and energy. Setting boundaries helps prevent burnout and ensures you’re not constantly overextending yourself.
- Try mindfulness: Mindfulness can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths or briefly focusing on the present moment. It doesn’t have to be a formal meditation session—just a moment to check in with yourself can be incredibly refreshing.
- Do what you love: Make time for activities that bring you joy. Whether it’s reading a book, enjoying a hobby, or spending time with loved ones, doing things you love is a vital part of taking care of yourself.
- Seek support: If you’re unsure how to start or feel overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to seek support. Chat with friends, join a community, or talk to a therapist. Having someone to share the journey with can be incredibly helpful.
- Clean-up: A clean, calm space is a calm mind they say, well it truly is. Take 10/15 minutes a day to clean your space and put away your stuff in the places it belongs: don’t put it down, put it away.
- Reflect and adapt: Self-care is a personal journey. What works for one person might not work for another. Reflect on what feels good and adjust your routine as needed. It’s perfectly okay to evolve and change your approach over time.
Tiny steps, big impact
To give you a good plan will help you starting your self-care, so here you go:
Morning routine
- Take a shower: To kick-start your da and to feel better, you should take a daily shower to freshen up!
- Good look: Do you hair, make-up, and put on clothes in which you feel good about yourself.
- Take a mindful walk: Go outside, soak in some sunlight to give your body a cortisol peak, get some exercise and be mindful about your walk and about your mindset in life: it’s your choice to be positive or not.
- Eat your breakfast: Your breakfast is the most important meal of the day; fuel your engines.
- Brush your teeth: Your oral hygiene is super important for bodily systems and for your looks and self-esteem.
Evening routine (after dinner)
- Put your phone away: After dinner, your screens are all not to be used; stop disturbing your sleep patterns with all the blue light, let your body get tired and help yourself to fall asleep by putting your phone away. It also is better for your mental health to not use social media before you go to bed, because else you will worry about all the things you see, read, and are “missing”, so stop the overthinking and put your phone away.
- Moment for yourself: read your favorite book, take a walk, play an instrument, do a meditation, start journaling: write your mind and 3 things which you are grateful for.
- Do your skin care: Don’t create a routine with too many steps, keep it simple: wash your face with a face wash & moisturize it afterwards.

Starting with self-care doesn’t mean transforming your life overnight. It’s about making small, thoughtful changes that make a big difference. I started from zero, just like many of you, and gradually found what worked for me. By beginning with small steps and being patient with yourself, you can create a self-care routine that supports your well-being.
So take a deep breath, start small, and remember that self-care is a journey, not a destination. You’ve got this! 🌟
